You can reach the town of Brian Head from US Interstate I-15 by taking the Parowan exit (Exit 75), driving east through Parowan, then south up Parowan Canyon on Utah highway 143. The town of Brian Head is about 12 miles from I-15.
WARNING: Some Brian Head websites and literature claim that Brian Head has 40 or so miles of groomed Nordic trails, which isn't true. They must be speaking of snowmobile trails. When our members looked for their claimed groomed XC trails years ago, there were none. Since then the only ones we know about are the (ungroomed) Cedar Breaks trails, and the ones mentioned below.
Burt's Road to Nowhere: (2009-2010)
Currently Brian Head has about 4 miles (one way) of sometimes groomed XC ski trails on what is called "Burt's Road to Nowhere," which proceeds in a northeasterly direction from the town. This road is closed to snowmobiles but snowmobilers often ignore the closure sign. Also, there are rumors that this area will soon be developed for condos and estates, thereby removing the XC ski trail. Currently, grooming is done only a few times a winter, when Peg Simons can talk the Brian Head Resort groomer into doing it. This area is owned by Brian Head Resort, which kindly allows us to ski there, provided we do not abuse the privilege. So please take care that you treat it as you would a national park trail. The official name of the Burt's Road area is "Alpine Creek."
To reach the start of the Burt's Road trail, you can park at the Town Hall, which is some half mile or so from the north end of town. Alternatively, the start of Burt's Road usually has a plowed parking area a couple hundred of yards north of Town Hall, on the east side of UT-143. From that parking area, just start skiing uphill (to the north) on the road. After a few minutes you will reach a gate with a "no snowmobile" sign. Proceed around the gate and continue north. You will have long uphill climbs with occasional downslopes. After 2 miles you will reach some loops to various viewpoints. Keep track of the forks you take so you don't get lost on the return trip. The GPS map below (thanks to Peg Simons) shows the complete trail, which may change somewhat from month to month.
Steam Engine Meadows: (2009-2010)
Another beautiful ungroomed Nordic area in Brian Head, that is destined soon to be "modernized" by developers and condos, is the Steam Engine Meadows area, which connects to the higher part of Burt's Road, described above. A map link of this area is below, thanks again to Peg Simons. Start next to Town Hall on Bear Flat/Steam Engine Drive and follow the red or gold streets on the map. Park along the road and ski off into the meadows. Hopefully, Peg will have broken trail for us so we can see where to go at the beginning.
To summarize what Peg says about Steam Engine Meadows: "From where you park, one follows what looks like a road cut, and then when you get out in the open, you can go wherever you want. Also, out where the loops on the map are, there are some logging areas with logs on the ground, but that should be pretty well covered by now. The main attraction of these 'trails' is the scenic view."
