About the Event

Due to expected inclement weather and uncertainty regarding parking availability at Deer Hollow, the Community Ski Day event planned for this Saturday has been POSTPONED until Saturday, February 24.

The GOOD news - we’ve received at least 26” of snow over the last 6 days, with more to come over the next couple of days.

The BAD news - since it’s been snowing every day this week, UDOT has been busy each day keeping Highway 14 safe for travel and will have to continue that work through the rest of this week.  It’s very unlikely that the Deer Hollow parking area will be cleared in time for the event.  So, no matter the weather, we wouldn’t be able to hold the event.

More GOOD news - We plan to be grooming tomorrow (Friday) in anticipation of a beautiful day on Sunday.  I expect we’ll have quite a few skiers up there on Sunday to take advantage of the conditions (IF there is parking available – if the highway has been cleared and UDOT is not working, skiers can park in the turnaround), and the freshly groomed trails will probably only have a couple of inches of new snow. REMEMBER – IF THE DEER HOLLOW PARKING AREA IS NOT PLOWED OPEN, DO NOT PARK IN THE SNOWPLOW TURNAROUND IF IT’S SNOWING AND UDOT CREWS ARE WORKING ANYWHERE ALONG HIGHWAY 14!

More BAD news - Besides having no parking, conditions are likely to be inhospitable at Deer Hollow on Saturday (Mostly cloudy, 70% chance of snow, high of 23, N-NW wind 8-18).  We want all participants to have FUN, especially if it’s their first time out on skis.  Cold, cloudy, and windy isn’t the best recipe for generating enthusiasm among beginners!

So, given the information we have today, the decision has been made to postpone the event until February 24.  Note: SUU Outdoors will NOT have snowshoes available on the 24th because of a pre-planned student outing, but we still plan to have cross-country ski gear available from Cedar Sports and SUU Outdoors.
